Little Shop of Horrors

Design isn’t limited to the realm of 2D, it is everywhere in the world around us, and what we can source or create from that can enhance our work. This project was a challenge to step away from the screen and create a film poster with elements that in some way were “Handmade.”

Little Shop of Horrors has always been a favourite of mine and I fully enjoyed using my hands to create a fresh and modern rendition of this classic.

This project is student work and was produced during my time at Shillington, School of Graphic Design.

Making of Audrey II

After creating concept art to determine the scale and overall design of the beast, I started construction with a wire armature which was then beefed up with layers of tightly pressed aluminium foil. This step allowed me to create the base for the sculpture that is cheaper, lighter, and more structurally sound than using pure clay.

Sculpey was then rolled into thin sheets and placed over the base and detailed to look for organic and “fleshy”. After baking and the clay was cooled and hardened, additional detail was added by carving and sanding way unnecessary bumps.

For the smooth transition of colors, I started out the painting process with an airbrush to achieve smooth gradients that felt natural and real, and then came in after with a paint brush to add the hard-edge details like the veins on the leaves. Once dry, it was sealed with clear matte enamel spray, and gloss enamel was specifically used only around the lips for an effect that mimicked a wet drooly mouth

After Effects

We took a ton of photos, but I wasn’t immediately satisfied with any of them. I took the photo that had the best overall angle for the base image and spliced in a head-shot that I preferred from another angle. I decided to make the head larger for a larger presence in the overall composition, as well as increasing the density of leaves by taking from other images as well.
